Positive Pedagogy for Sport Coaching: A humanistic and holistic approach to coaching
Location: Living Learning Center/Walter 145
In this presentation, I outline the features of PPed, the theory and philosophy underpinning it and how coaches can use it to improve their coaching and think more deeply and effectively. Drawing on developments in coaching and teaching team sports over the past few decades for its core features, PPed is underpinned by a view of learning in and through sport as a holistic and humanistic activity. As with so many good ideas, little is actually new or revolutionary in PPed but, instead, it is a cluster of good ideas about athlete learning and making the experience positive.

Using Game Sense in the game of Australian football (AFL)
In what is sometimes referred to as a traditional approach to athlete development, coaches typically first focus on technique development of optimal movement patterns. The practice environment is planned to manage information loads through decomposition of tasks into micro-components. The components are typically trained before practicing the complete task. In this workshop, a game-based approach to practice sessions will be simulated from warm-up through to the warm-down with craft work at the end of the session, using the game of Australian football (AFL). Because the game of AFL is a complex dynamic system, a game rarely depends upon the simple application of tactical patterns drilled by the predictability of ‘off the line’ training tasks.

Athlete-Centered Coaching in Striking & Fielding Games
I will demonstrate to you how to apply the principles of Positive Pedagogy using a Teaching
Games for Understanding/Game Sense approach within the theme of Striking & Field games, with
an emphasis on using the game of Cricket as our vehicle for learning and understanding this
teaching/coaching approach. I will use Cricket as our foundation, a game that most of you will
never have played before, to highlight the successes you can have and the challenges you will
face when using such an approach in your Physical Education lessons and/or Coaching sessions,
particularly when you have novice and/or inexperienced pupils/players that no nothing about a
particular game that you are trying to teach them.

Baton change workshop
This PPed workshop provides an example of how it can be used to coach highly technical aspects of individual sports by focusing on facilitating athlete learning of how to efficiently pass and receive the baton in the 4 X 100 metre relay. It begins with direct instruction about how to pass and receive the baton and how to use the changeover zone to best maintain speed but gradually moves toward empowering the athletes and engaging them in active learning as they refine their technique through coach questioning, dialogue, problem solving and collaboration. By the end of the session all participants will be working as groups of independent learners and working as a team to develop efficient technique. Each session will finish with at least one 4 x 100 metre relay.

Make sure you bring athletic shoes, shorts, water bottle, etc.

Purposefully modifying games
The Game Sense coaching approach recognizes skill as technical and tactical complementarity: that is, skill is demonstrated in the moment of the game where player ability successfully meets the situated opportunity for action. In this workshop, proven principles of skill acquisition will be explored within the context of a Game Sense approach to coaching that develops ‘thinking players’ who are consistently successful on-field decision makers, and players who share ‘mental models’ of action plans to assist collective decision making. From this workshop, you will get instructional tools and ideas for your practice. The Australian Sport of NRL-Touch Football will be used for this practical experience.
Make sure you bring athletic shoes, shorts, water bottle, etc.

Application of the principles of player/athlete-centered coaching
I will share with you my knowledge, understanding, and successes of Athlete/Player-centred
Coaching within a variety of settings in schools and clubs and in different cultures and
environments. I will start off by sharing some thoughts and definitions of “What is coaching?” and
show various examples of Coaching to give you the perspective that coaching is along a
continuum. For the main body of the presentation, I will share with you the definition of Playercentred
Coaching and how to apply each principle. I will start off by explaining WHY you should
apply such a Philosophy to your teaching/coaching. I will then move into HOW you do Playercentred
Coaching and then finish with some examples of WHAT Player-centred Coaching is. The
focus here will be in how to create and develop a Culture within your environment, whether that
be in a Physical Education lesson or a Sports Coaching setting.

Flow in positive pedagogy for sport coaching
Living Learning Center/Walter 145
Flow is an important concept in PPed in two ways. The first as a reference to a state of flow proposed by Csikszentmihalyi that provides conditions for optimal athlete performance and experience and the second in reference to a more the flow of experiences, activities and learning during a coaching session. Flow is not only a state of optimal learning and performance in sport but also contributes to happiness and wellbeing as positive subjective experience acting in unison with enjoyment. There are marked similarities between how Csikszentmihalyi and colleagues suggest flow can be facilitated for athletes and PPed. This presentation examines the concept of flow in sport and its importance in PPed as well as discussing how it can shape coaching and how coaches using PPed can maximize opportunities for their athletes to experience flow in competition and in practice.
